EcoHouse Design

The EcoHouse cottage starts with a simple home design process for creative and efficient use of space and materials.  Our process allows you to choose from standard design modules, make personalized modifications, and configure the modules for a custom home design. We follow the three standard steps of architectural design, outlined below, to help you create a healthy home environment with optimum energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact.

1. Schematic Design

This step is all about fleshing out your Dream. We start by helping you to consider your space requirements, budget, lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, etc. We make it easy with the following steps and design examples:

a1.1-150x150b1.1-150x150a) Choose your base design module

  • square, rectangle, octagon…
  • one story, two story, or more
  • gable, hip, or mono-pitch roof
  • porches and decks

2. Design Development

The second step adds detail to the schematic design to establish a plan. Here we will clarify window and door placement, specify construction details, choose materials, and estimate costs.

3. Construction Documents

This final step solidifies the plan to get ready to build. Construction documents are prepared for permitting. Suppliers and subcontractors are chosen, and a project management process is implemented.

To begin the design process, start to consider some of the aspects required to pursue your dream.

Shared Housing at Echo Hills Cottages

We're moving along nicely with development of our "intentional" neighborhood. Three homes are completed and occupied. Another home is just about done and will be occupied by mid July. Our fifth is well on it's way and we hope to have the owner in this fall. Another … [Read More...]

The Glenway House

Before Echo Hills Cottages, there was "The Glenway House." We were given the opportunity to transform a 3500 sq.ft  house, in a great North Asheville neighborhood, into a shared home for up to five adults. This wonderful house was a near perfect canvas to co-create this … [Read More...]

What’s New at Echo Hills Cottages.

There's been great progress here at Echo Hills Cottages since our last update in January of this year. Connie and Bob moved into their new home in May. The octagonal shaped, green built house features an open floor plan, custom cabinets, a porch with a beautiful view, and … [Read More...]

An Echo Hills Story

Several years before my retirement, I found myself investigating intentional communities in North Carolina. When my partner, Bob, read about Echo Hills and then visited in October of 2013, we began to consider what it would mean to move into a developing community. Despite … [Read More...]
